Coaching and mentoring for academic and creative writers.
Are you in the ‘crunch’ stage of your PhD, struggling to get your thesis written? Do you dream of finishing that first book if you could just find the time? Maybe you’re a seasoned professional finding your way back to writing after career roadblocks or burnout?
Over the past decade, I’ve worked with more than a thousand writers, including postgraduate students, established researchers, aspiring novelists and multi-published bestselling authors.
This has led to a deep interest in coaching both academic and creative writers to finish their projects and develop a personalised writing practice that is meaningful and sustainable for them.
What can you expect?
From day one, the process is focused entirely on you. Using evidenced-based approaches from both coaching and mentoring, our sessions will be tailored to meet you where you are and support you as you work towards where you want to be.
Coaching and mentoring with me typically includes one or more of the following:
Support to identify or clarify your priority development areas as a writer
Working together to create a personalised action plan to help you achieve your writing goal(s)
Tools, tips, and strategies for navigating your unique obstacles
Accountability to progress your projects and cultivate a writing practice that aligns with your career aspirations
A safe space for questioning and reflection as you pilot and embed new ways of working.
My goal is to empower you, not foster dependency. Generally, we’ll work together over a mutually agreed ‘series’ of meetings (via Zoom), appropriate to the goal(s) you bring to coaching. After that, it’s time for me to fade into the background…
Am I the coach for you?
I’ve won writing awards. My articles and short stories have appeared in print and online. My books have been translated into multiple languages. Yet… I’ve never found writing truly easy.
This gives me a deep empathy for the practical, cognitive and emotional challenges of finding your best words and getting them out into the world. Put simply: I will champion and challenge you to pursue your goals, while recognising that the road to success can be far from smooth!
But that’s just the start. Alongside being an author, I’ve spent 15 years teaching and researching productivity, pedagogy and psychology* for writers at all levels. I’m a member of the National Association of Writers in Education (UK). And, as a full member of the Association for Coaching, I’ve completed accredited coach training, abide by a global code of ethics, receive regular supervision, and am committed to continuing professional development (for example, in 2024 I completed accredited training in relational dynamics and coaching for stress, and in 2025 I’m studying neurodiversity coaching at postgraduate level).
*though I’m not a chartered psychologist - if that’s what you need, please seek out someone with the appropriate training and registrations.
